George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak, the company that popularised photography once said:

“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”

It was a little under half way through my photographic career that I came to realise how accurate this statement was. A knowledge of light is fundamental to our understanding of photography but it goes beyond that. Light isn’t just a physical property of transmission, reflection or refraction, it is also an ‘emotion’ and by that I mean it induces emotion in a similar way to music.

How does it do this? Well part of it is imprinting, in that we become familiar through culture to certain styles or moods that light conveys and part of it is actual science in that the human brain is pre-programmed to perceive visual stimuli in a certain ways for survival reasons.

Photographing with natural light doesn’t mean you’re limited to working outside. In this portrait photography class, Karl demonstrates a different type of natural light photography – natural light photography indoors.  One of the key things to consider when working inside is your location. Big windows are your friend but too much light can actually be a bad thing. It’s important to study the location and understand the potential benefits or problems that the room you’re working in provides.  This natural light photography example shows an at-home indoor shoot. In this post-production class, Karl walks you through his editing and retouching process as he works on the RAW files he captured in White Blocks Fashion Shoot.  As Karl moves from Phocus to Photoshop, you’ll learn how to use highlight control and layer masks to manage instances of over-exposure.  You’ll also see Karl use the Healing Brush and Clone Stamp tool as he addresses imperfections in the floor, background, blocks, and more.  As he works on the model’s face, hands and legs, Karl demonstrates precise burning and dodging. In this fashion photography class, Karl shows you how to create broad, soft lighting by using the white studio wall as a kind of giant softbox.  You’ll see Karl and the team working hard to position the white blocks perfectly and find the right power setting for the lights directed at the wall. He also explains his choice of modifier for these background lights.  Once the model enters the shot, you’ll watch Karl introduce a new fill light, plus some props, as he seeks the ideal exposure for Suzannah, her outfit and her accessories.  Then it’s time for Suzannah to throw some shapes as she and Karl experiment with a range of dynamic poses, including some involving a wind machine.
