  • As one of the staples of the indie-folk genre, The Lumineers have seen the heights of the charts several times. In April of 2016, the band released the hit song “Angela”, with a meticulously crafted arrangement and sonic landscape.
  • In this Puremix exclusive, Grammy award-winning engineer and mixer, Ryan Hewitt, goes inside the mix and deconstructs the song piece by piece, going further than simple mixing techniques to explain the effect that a great arrangement can have to build excitement and take the listener on a journey, from a simple guitar and vocal song to a full-blown orchestral climax.
  • During this 2 hour video, Ryan explains how he:
  • Achieved the iconic vocal sound that establishes a connection between the singer and the audience
  • Created bass guitar tones that translate to small speakers
  • Added forward-driving momentum to unique percussion tracks
  • Creates contrast and scene changes as the song moves from section to section, all building up to an emotional finish
  • This is your chance to sit next to Ryan Hewitt, and take a behind the scenes look at the creation of an indie folk smash hit.

KelbyOne - Working a Scene: Building with Small Flash
"Lighting tools have evolved to a place where even small, hot shoe style flashes can be brought to bear in complex ways to create an entire scene that has nuance, color, depth, and dimension. Environmental portraiture and the idea of lighting an entire place was often regarded as the province of big flash. Not so anymore. In this session, our unique studio (formerly a bank) is transformed via small flash into a complex dramatic location photograph. Every person or situation that presents itself in front of the lens to photographers is unique and demands equally unique solutions and reactions at the camera. But often in the tumult of an actual assignment, there is no time to parse out the exact look of an umbrella, a softbox, or a beauty dish, or how all these can work together in concert. In this fast-paced session, we'll take light shaping tools, and work with the same face, in the same environment, and observe."

Mixinglight - Film Print Emulation: A Deep Dive Into The Filmbox OFX Plugin (for DaVinci Resolve)
https://mixinglight.com/color-grading-tutorials/fpe-part-4-filmbox-ml1143/
  • In this series we started by defining Film Print Emulation (FPE) and using the default FPE LUTs built directly into DaVinci Resolve. In Part 2 we looked at a popular Power Grade product, based entirely on nodes (PixelTools). We shifted gears in Part 3 and used a well-regarded DCTL (by Paul Dore). In this Insight, we are shifting gears again and to take an in-depth look at a very popular, very well regarded OpenFX FPE plugin, Video Village’s Filmbox.

Mixinglight - Film Print Emulation – Breaking Down PixelTools ‘Film Lab PowerGrades’
https://mixinglight.com/color-grading-tutorials/fpe-part-2-pixeltools-film-lab/

  • In the first episode of this series we examined Resolve’s built-in film print emulation (FPE) LUTs.  Now we’ll look at the PixelTools’ flexible ‘Film Lab Powergrades’, which builds a more fully-featured FPE pipeline around those stock DaVinci Resolve FPE LUTS. Film Lab PowerGrades includes additional nodes and operations for: Saturation and look enhancements, Adding grain and halation attributes, Enabling blur – mimicking the slightly unsharp look of theatrical film prints
  • All of this is delivered in a pre-built node structure that’s logically organized and neatly arranged.  It’s an accessible FPE solution that doesn’t require any additional LUTs, DCTLs or OFX plugins. This premium PowerGrade package is designed to work with both the free and paid versions of any standard DaVinci Resolve installation.
