The Gnomon Workshop - Modeling For Film & TV: Hard-Surface Vehicles
The Gnomon Workshop - Modeling For Film & TV: Hard-Surface Vehicles
Duration: 2h 52m | Format: HD 1920x1080
If you want to push your models to the industry gold standard, this workshop will show you how professional modelers working in film and TV create world-class production-quality vehicles.
When modeling assets in the visual effects industry, artists are often supplied with scans or photogrammetry of the subject to retopologize and match the references. However, there are frequently times when this isn’t the case, and in those instances, it’s essential to know what to do and how to tackle these scenarios working from limited references only — which is expected of every modeler working on complex shows and often under very quick turnarounds.
In this 3-hour workshop, Josh Docherty takes you through the process of modeling a high-resolution vehicle without a scan, relying on the use of camera lineups and using his tips, tricks, and industry knowledge to create the same high-quality, pipeline-ready asset in a limited amount of time.
This tutorial teaches how to create a clean, robust model for downstream use by other departments, including Texturing/Lookdev, Rigging, Animation, FX, and Lighting. Different departments often have many requirements and needs that modelers are responsible for ensuring are considered and fulfilled to the best of their abilities. This helps the entire pipeline perform efficiently for all things model-related.
Josh demonstrates many of the best practices and actions artists can take to ensure assets function at their best, using native Maya tools to achieve the same results at home — all while adhering to the same rules as the largest pipelines in the industry. This workshop is best suited for junior-level modelers and above.
The references used for this workshop are from Bring a Trailer, and the HDRI featured is from PolyHaven. Josh uses PureRef, Maya, Arnold, Redshift (optional), Lightroom & Photoshop as his tools of choice, though the techniques demonstrated can be applied to other software.

The Gnomon Workshop - Jordu Schell Creature Studio
The Gnomon Workshop - Jordu Schell Creature Studio

Duration: 2h 46m | Format: HD 1280x720
In this lecture, one of Hollywood's most prolific concept sculptors, Jordu Schell demonstrates the techniques he employs in creating a dynamic creature concept sculpture. Jordu begins with a rough armature, then walks you through the process of correctly building up forms by roughing in the large masses of the creature before the addition of muscular and other anatomical forms. He then covers the topic of dynamically posing the creature for maximum impact. Once the pose is decided on and the shape of the creature is established, Jordu transitions from using only his hands to using tools to begin refining the creature, working on defining the muscular forms, adding definition and detail, and finally blending the forms back together to create a unified appearance. Once the creature sculpt is smoothed and refined, textural detail is added back into the skin, using small tubes of clay for veins, a pin for pore detail, and finally using a texture stamp to apply a texture over the entire sculpt. Next, Jordu applies paint to the creature using a paintbrush to apply the base color of the creature. Next he uses an airbrush to refine the color and establish a translucent appearance to the skin. The final touches include placing individual translucent teeth and applying glossy paint to the eyes and teeth.

The Gnomon Workshop - Efficient Cinematic Lighting
The Gnomon Workshop - Efficient Cinematic Lighting

This lecture covers the principles of good composition with an emphasis on effective cinematic lighting. Jeremy begins by discussing the fundamental concepts behind how light operates in the physical world, providing an overview of topics like reflection, absorption, refraction, color temperature and atmospheric dispersion. He then moves into camera based composition, discussing topics like camera angles, distance, lenses and depth of field which all help to define the mood of a shot. The lecture then transitions into more of the artistic elements of lighting and composition as it relates to computer graphics. Techniques such as three-point lighting, framing, tonal gradients, implied lighting, atmosphere and various lighting setups are used to set mood and assist in the story telling process. These principles are then applied using software: Maya as the primary 3D tool. Jeremy discusses basic software: Maya lighting but quickly moves on to setting up various lighting conditions using V-Ray for software: Maya, to achieve beautiful global illumination effects while still paying close attention to the principles outlined in the early part of the lecture.
