A2 Subway 56 Font

Originally commissioned in 2015 by art director Matt Willey for the New York Times Magazine ‘Walking’ issue. Tribute is a typeface by German type designer Frank Heine. This is Heine’s fourth release with Emigre Fonts. Remedy, released in 1991, was a major commercial success. Its curlicue, free-style, comic appearance, provided a perfect counter to Emigre’s then primarily modular type designs. Dalliance, a classic roman and script combo based on handwriting from a photocopy of a 1799 battle map, was released in 2002 and became an instant classic.

TheW NYC Font Family

TheW NYC (text styles) were initially developed for Sport&Style magazine under the creative direction of designers Régis Tosetti and Simon Palmieri. We responded to their needs by creating a Didot variation that is very flexible — a conventional one would have been too mechanical. The condensed proportion as well as most serif endings of the uppercase letters were retained. For the use in text, it was crucial to establish the right rhythm within the lowercase. The ‘e’ became asymmetrical, breaking the verticality of a traditional Didot.
