Initially drawn in a single Regular style for the comprehensive re-design of photography magazine Hotshoe. Basis was exhaustively refined and extended into a seven-style brood, and in-so-doing has been tested in copious iterations and sub-iterations across countless platforms, printed and otherwise. Initial points of inspiration — among them Akzidenz and various early Grotesques from Monotype — were ultimately eschewed-but-honored to create something slightly more behaved and shapely. An intentional skeletal similarity among the weights prompts an otherwise truly diverse clan of types, ranging from Light to Black. Basis Grotesque is available in seven weights —  Thin, ExtraLight, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black — alongside corresponding Italics. Basis also contains a Monospaced family in four weights — Light, Regular, Medium and Bold — alongside Italic variants. It is available to license in both Standard (‘STD’) and Professional (‘PRO’) versions. The latter contains a series of OpenType features and stylistic alternates, alongside support for both Cyrillic and Greek scripts.

Auguste Serif Studio Makgill’s previous releases with Colophon (Pantograph 2009, Central Avenue 2011, Garton 2021) have been formed and adapted from lettering found on various, often rudimentary, ephemera, acting a catalyst for each typeface’s creation. The original reference source for Auguste was the lettering on an old ceramic bottle, distinguished by the apparent disintegration of the stenciling through overuse. Makgill’s original intention was a faithful redraw, retaining a peculiar mix of both Serif and Sans-Serif qualities.  The project forked, expanding from the development of a singular style into two distinct type families: Auguste Sans and Auguste Serif, both with a variety of weights. As a result of this division, Auguste is able to build upon the original reference’s equity, whilst maintaining the qualities of both Sans and Serif genres within each variant. The two type families have strong and distinct qualities of their own, yet their common core DNA allows them to be used in unison or interchangeably with ease.
