New York City: 1850. Our story begins in a steampunk-style alternate universe in which the New York City subway system is established before the turn of the century. Our protagonist is a renowned Italian artiste, disembarking from a transatlantic trip from the Old World and greeted with acclaim in New York. Let’s call him Massimo. His fame precedes him after his success in designing the Milanese horse-powered transportation signage.

Now, he is called on to apply his craft to the newly-minted feat of engineering that is the subway of Manhattan. With aplomb, he chooses the consummate type for the job: Decoro Tuscan. Its chiseled stems recall a stately top hat, and its bifurcated serifs curl heavenward like an expertly waxed mustache.
