• The objective of this project was to design a new typeface series for Grazia magazine. First published in 2010, Regal was later revamped and redesigned for commercial use, evolving into a type system with five related superfamilies. According to the brief, this typeface had to be elegant, luxurious, sexy, vibrant, reflect the female sensitivity and take into consideration a modern woman who is more proud, more connected, more spontaneous, open-minded and eager to try a whole host of new products and services. Targeting this consumption-wise and well-educated woman, required a typeface that is not strictly based on classic forms, but incorporates several distinct elements that express a modern woman’s personality and the products she consumes. In that respect, a whole series of 5 related superfamilies was designed, which not only emphasize femininity but also reflect both the romantic as well as the dynamic side of the female personality. For that matter, elegant curvy details were introduced in order to create a link to the female figure; teardrop terminals which reflect a woman’s sensitivity; pronounced quirks on upper and lower arms for her eyelashes; high-contrast, sharp corners at thinning terminals for her high heels; alternate glyphs for the woman who prefers to express her individuality -rather than slavishly follow trends- by using various accessories which can dramatically change her appearance; elegant endings and long curves to reflect her predisposition to dream; bell-shaped serifs with an inward rather than outward direction which recall streamlined seventies fashion. This series of typefaces is diverse in its construction as it consists of five related superfamilies i.e. text, display, finesse, swash and stencil. There is a variety of weights which range from regular to ultra black for each one of the five families. These families share common attributes but they differ in content according to each one’s usage. The whole superfamily type system is comprised of 47 weights with an average of 898 glyphs per weight. It supports simultaneously Latin, Cyrillic and Greek and comes with many alternate glyphs.

• When I designed the first Reina¹ circa 2010, I was at the dawn of my career as a type designer. The S{o}TA, short for the Society of Typographic Aficionados, described it as complex display typeface incorporating hairline flourishes to a nicely heavy romantic letterform². And it was like that; that’s what I was pursuing at that time since I was very passionate about ornaments and accolades of Calligraphy. Why? I felt that Typography, in general, needed more of them. These subtle flourishes could breathe life into letters. Maybe, I thought it was the only way I could propose something new into the field of type. However, after some years, I came across a very interesting quote: –Beautiful things don’t ask for attention– Wow! What did this mean? How could something be attractive if it’s not actually showing it. Could this be applied to my work? Sure.

• Zulia is located in the west of Venezuela and it is the state in where Joluvian grew up. It is a region of sunshine, high temperatures, oil and cheerful people, although we choose the name to honor his mother who is from there (zuliana) and who is proud of her land and everything that it represents the area. Zulia is also his first typographic project. It is based on two of his favourite calligraphic styles: italic and brush pen. He started with simple and contrasted strokes on paper with brush and marker. After that he developed the full alphabet and its various options for each letter, starting from a set of handmade forms that could be connected in different ways according to the user needs. What motivates him to involve this style was to create a differentiation with his daily work by generating a heavier type, contrasted and low rise. Zulia finally got life of its own with the participation of Alejandro Paul and a feedback of techniques and skills that were generated with the duo work. Zulia is not just a typeface, Zulia is his love of letters.

• Ganache is lovely and strong—not a true script, roman, or italic, but a distinctive hybrid. It’s smart, intricate, and fun, and deceptively simple. The type designer’s fascination with letter-fitting makes this an intriguing exercise in negative space. Note the lowercase and to a slightly lesser extent, the g slides into the negative space of the n. Sit a d and a b side by side, and these two sturdy, functional letters form a soft, sweeping curve in between—a delightful morsel. The uppercase letters are boldly stylish, and here, some of the counters display unexpected shapes. The O’s curlique tucks in to give the counter a form with the power to anchor a logo. The lowercase c echoes this in its counter. Between some letters, the negative space is transformed into a type of swash itself. Small, subtle surprises like these are sprinkled through this carefully structured typeface, giving it the power and charm to hold up in reversed out lettering (light on dark) in which the counters take on more prominence. Ganache surmounts the core challenge of packaging: to achieve functional goals without the loss of interest that makes a product invisible. It finds a happy balance: a heavy, substantial text that isn't dainty or wispy, one that says, “I'm over here!” with a dollop of sweetness and an enticing little wave. Ganache is accompanied by 185 swashes and alternates and 10 ornaments. The default has its distinctive “swashyness,” stylized but not extreme. Open Type’s Titling feature offers a simpler version, in which, for example, crossbars have a more standard roman look, and remnants of swashes are removed.
