• Germany has got a strong heritage of industrial typefaces. These fonts feel like being constructed by engineers. The shapes look like they have been built with circles and squares. DIN Mittelschrift is one very famous example, or the font on the old german car numberplates. Since the »Romain du Roi« we know that it is tricky to draw a geometrical typeface. For optical reasons you have to go away from circles and lines with exactly one weight.
• Therefore the aime is not to construct a typeface but to draw it the way it feels constructed finally. As you can see on the picture, the final typeface is not constucted at all. The design of a typeface is like stage production. Like stongly made up acters the characters of a typeface must be superrelevated, to be very clear in there seeming. Particularly in small sizes. Konsens has got 9 weights from Light to Ultrabold with italics like most of my other families. In addition to that, there is a Stencil headline companion. It also has got 9 weights but no italics.

• In comparison to most of my typefaces that tend to be fairly expressive, I wanted Voice to be simple, effective and easy to use. Voice was designed to work well in a wide range of sizes, and also in narrow tight columns with a wide range of weights. Those are some criteria for a good corporate typeface that I could clearly see in all my corporate branding projects. It is not that a brand needs all the weights but some appropriate weights can be chosen from that wide range. In copy you should not use heavier than Heavy. ExtraBold and UltraBold work best in display. Recommended uses: corporate branding, magazines and other publications.

• In 2006 the art director of Emotion, a women’s psychology magazine, asked me to design a copy typeface for them. Before I actually got the job I started to work on a serif. I wanted it to be feminine but still clear and modern. On one hand there are the floral round elements and on the other hand the angular serifs.
• In the composition I wanted the two extremes to work together. All the other elements had to be harmonized.
• The proportions needed to match the magazine’s requirements. The ascenders and descenders are short enough to work in narrow columns but long enough to work in small sizes.
• As you can imagine, the emotion-job never happened. Verse is now a serif and a san-serif with 7 weights with italics and smallcaps.
• In copy you should not get heavier than Heavy. Extrabold and Ultrabold work best in display.

• The idea for Granat goes back to my mysterious typeface Telepiu and later Teleneue. The straight horizontal bars in combination with the round joins create a very unique character.
