This work is designed expressly for readers who for various reasons are inter- ested in science, but are not professional mathematicians. Experience shows that it is almost always the case that while such people enjoy reading or lis- tening to expositions on the natural sciences, and feel that they are gaining from them knowledge which enriches their view of the world, they find an article on current mathematics to be written in an incompx;ehensible jargon, and dealing with concepts too abstract to be of the slightest interest.
The book is of interest for students of mathematics or of neighbouring subjects like physics, engineering, computer science, and also for people who have at least school level (Abitur)mathematics and have kept some interest in it.
