Snicker (2007) is a playful 1940s-style brush-lettered sans serif. It was inspired by hand-lettered titles in Fleischer Brothers' Superman cartoon series. The font includes some extra features when used with OpenType-savvy applications including case-sensitive punctuation, automatic fractions, and extended language support. A handy user guide is included to help get the most out of Snicker’s OpenType features.

Fashionable for almost 200 years.Created for “one of the most dramatic magazine reinventions in history,” HTF Didot honors a heroic period in French typographic history.Modern typefaces, characterized by consistently horizontal stress, flat and unbracketed serifs, and a high contrast between thin and thick strokes, were the final step in typography’s two-hundred-year journey away from calligraphy. In the late eighteenth century the style was perfected, and became forever associated with two typographic giants: in Parma, Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813), and in Paris, Firmin Didot (1764-1836). Didot was a member of the Parisian dynasty that dominated French typefounding for two centuries, and he’s remembered today as the namesake of a series of Neoclassical typefaces that exquisitely captured the Modern style. It is these typefaces that HTF Didot revives.

Phil Martin, creator of over 400 typefaces from the late '60s through the '80s, designed Grad as a redesign of the classic Century Schoolbook for his personal use in the early '90s.Changes both subtle and obvious have been made and many new features have been added such as small caps, old style figures, ligatures, and swash capitals.All characters, including the swashes, small caps, and alternate characters are included in the basic Grad, Grad Italic, and Grad Bold fonts. Lakeside is a 1940s-style brush script inspired by the hand-lettered titles in the film noir classic “Laura”. It is available exclusively in the OpenType font format and features three different styles of caps—normal caps, over-sized titling caps, and smaller, plainer caps for all-caps settings.Lakeside has been programmed so that it automatically chooses the appropriate letter shapes as you type based on whether the letter appears at the beginning, middle or end of a word. The crossbar on the lowercase “t” extends itself if space allows. Lakeside also features an alternate cap “S” in a more traditional style and the ability to create automatic, arbitrary fractions.

Informed by the same kind of rationalist thinking that inspired the great sans serifs of the Bauhaus, Geometrics abandon traditional forms in favor of mathematical strategies. A Geometric’s O is circular rather than elliptical, and its forms shed their residual contrast between thicks and thins. Geometrics usually apply this same rationalism to the woollier parts of the alphabet, replacing the alphabet’s beaks and tails and ball terminals with a program of matching serifs. While these faces can sometimes be bracingly modern, they’re often monotonous, and many Geometrics suffer from an astringent sting that makes them difficult to use and unwelcome to read.

 Originally developed for Sports Illustrated, the Champion Gothic series was created to help designers deal with headlines of different lengths. Rather than rewrite a headline that runs too long or too short — or worse, resort to the abominable practice of stretching the fonts — Champion users can step gently toward narrower or wider fonts, helping make the text fit, without alerting the reader.American woodtypes of the late nineteenth century served as the inspiration for Champion Gothic, in both form and philosophy. Before the modern idea of the rational type family, in which a central design is reshaped to make different weights and widths, woodtype makers produced typefaces “in series,” collecting visually related designs together under the same name. Unlike a type family, fonts produced in series usually had no central design, a practice that Champion follows. As a result, each of Champion’s six styles feels like the normal width.

In developing Cyclone, an adaptation of our Knockout No. 67 typeface, we identified one of the culprits: a set of six letters, whose design can dramatically polarize the disposition of a typeface.
