Since the late 2010s, rubber bridge guitars have been multiplying throughout indie rock music, even making notable appearances in pop music. Although people have been using various approaches throughout history to give guitars a more muted sound, the concept of using a rubber bridge is thanks to Reuben Cox, luthier and owner of Old Style Guitar Shop in Los Angeles, California. His unique addition of a rubber bridge tastefully dampens the guitar’s sustain, giving notes a prominent/plucky attack with a swift, yet pure, decay.

During the Autumn of 2023 Michael Askill, a highly prolific and accomplished Australian percussionist was introduced to sound designer/composer (and regular Splice contributor) Liam Fox O’Brien. The two met at Michael’s home studio in Mullumbimby, Australia to connect over their shared love of rare musical instruments and conduct a 3-day long field-recording session. The aim was to catalogue the hundreds of one-off, handmade percussion instruments from around the globe in Michael’s collection and dive through Michael’s 50+ year back catalogue of unreleased recordings to forge a completely original library for Splice.

With its snappy attack and mellow sustain, this little bass delivers all the low frequency content you need for the backbone of your music as well as the rich-sounding sustain necessary for melodic, memorable bass lines. Speaking of melodic, there’s also a slight “bloom” to its sustain, probably due to its hollow construction rather than having a solid body like most electric basses. Even though it’s unquestionably an electric bass, this characteristic lends a subtle acoustic-like quality to the shape of the notes.
