• Every designer has admired the no-nonsense lettering of the American vernacular, those letters of paint, plaster, neon, glass and steel that figure so prominently in the urban landscape. From these humble beginnings comes Gotham, a hard-working typeface for the ages.
• Gotham celebrates the attractive and unassuming lettering of the city. New York is teeming with such letters, handmade sans serifs that share a common underlying structure, an engineer’s idea of “basic lettering” that transcends both the characteristics of their materials and the mannerisms of their makers. These are the cast bronze numbers that give office doorways their authority, and the markings on cornerstones whose neutral and equable style defies the passage of time. They’re the matter-of-fact neon signs that emblazon liquor stores and pharmacies, and the names of proprietors plainly painted on delivery trucks. These letters are straightforward and non-negotiable, yet possessed of great personality, and often expertly made. And although designers have lived with them for more than half a century, they remarkably went unrevived until 2000, when we introduced Gotham.
• Gotham is that rarest of designs, the new typeface that feels somehow familiar. From the lettering that inspired it, Gotham inherited an honest tone that’s assertive but never imposing, friendly but never folksy, confident but never aloof. FF Real Font Family

FF Real was originally conceived by Erik Spiekermann as one text weight and one headline weight to be used as the only faces in his biography Hello I am Erik, edited by Johannes Erler, published in 2014. While Spiekermann drew the alphabets, he passed on the font data to Ralph du Carrois who cleaned it up and completed it. In the meantime FF Real has been extended to a family of two styles and 13 weights each. The design of FF Real is rooted in early static grotesques from the turn of the century. Several German type foundries – among them the Berlin-based foundries Theinhardt and H. Berthold AG – released such designs between 1898 and 1908. The semi-bold weight of a poster-size typeface that was lighter than most of the according semi-bolds in metal type at the time, gave the impetus to FF Real’s regular weight. In the words of Spiekermann, the historical example is “the real, non-fake version, as it were, the royal sans serif face“, thus giving his new typeface the name “Real” (which is also in keeping with his four-letter names, i.e. FF Meta, FF Unit). FF Real is a convincing re-interpretation of the German grotesque style, but with much more warmth and improved legibility. With a hint towards the warmer American grotesques, Spiekermann added those typical Anglo-American features such as a three-story ‘g’ and an ‘8’ with a more defined loop. To better distinguish characters in small text sizes, FF Real Text comes in old style figures, ‘f’ and ‘t’ are wider, the capital ‘I’ is equipped with serifs, as is the lowercase ‘l’. What’s more, i-dots and all punctuation are round. In Spiekermann’s biography FF Real Text has proven to endure all challenges of a proper text face without an italic, while FF Real Head cuts a fine figure in larger sizes with a more reduced look.

Madurai Slab Font Family

Chennai’s market-tested type styles have taken new form once again. The geometric forms of Chennai and its derivant Madurai, both successful in web-based applications and logotypes, have now been adapted for the superfamily Madurai Slab, a potent, square slab serif ideal for headlines and posters. Under the surface of Madurai Slab’s straightforward geometric structure, the font’s exaggerated vertical serifs provide the face with an extra chunk that commands the reader’s attention and gives the font more impact in its heavier styles. The extra-fortified forms are anything but monotonous, though. A display typeface referencing the lettering work of Brazilian Art Deco master, J. Carlos. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he contributed to all prime publications from the 1900s to the late 1940s, including O Malho, Fon-Fon!, Para Todos, and O Cruzeiro, picturing a range of fictionalized characters and popular figures of the time — being "Melindrosa" a recurring persona who represented the feminist movement in the 1920s.

Henk began during my studies at the Type Media masters course at KABK as my final project. Henk has been planned as a family of at least 6 styles with two different personalities. Henk Out and Henk Work. Henk Work is a smart and hardworking gentleman typeface designed for the writing of the long legal texts which often contain a lot of abbreviations and numbers in them.

This typeface was inspired by Zoltán Nagy's Margaret from the 1960's Hungary. This was one of the award winning designs in the 1966 International Type Face Design Competition sponsored by Visual Graphics Corporation, with judges including Paul Rand and Herb Lubalin. My plan is to expand the original design with a matching cursive style (which Nagy started, but never finished), a lighter weight, small capitals, oldstyle figures and optical sizes, which would also simulate the effects of phototypesetting. These were the letter shapes that first inspired me to start type design.

The goal of this experiment was to design a multi-purpose typeface based on early Cyrillic graphics. The glyph forms are cleared of contrast, decorative elements and stylistic features of any specific age, or writer. They are as close to skeleton as possible to make the typeface contemporary, fairly neutral, yet definitely early-Cyrillic (pre-Westernisation) style.
