Scientists and the Sea, 1650–1900: A Study of Marine Science

Scientists and the Sea, 1650–1900: A Study of Marine Science By Margaret Deacon

2016 | 504 Pages | ISBN: 1859283527 | PDF | 56 MB

Scientists and the Sea is a history of how the scientific study of the sea has developed over a period of nearly 2500 years. Beginning with the speculations of Greek philosophers it carries the story forward, showing how curiosity about the ocean appeared in many different forms and locations before, in the late 19th century, the first deep-sea researches heralded the foundation of the science known today as oceanography. Originally published in 1971, this book has never been superseded as the most comprehensive and wide-ranging treatment of the emergence of marine science within the western scientific tradition. After three introductory chapters dealing with knowledge up to the Renaissance, the main part of the work shows how pioneers of scientific observation at sea during the 17th and 18th centuries made notable discoveries, but that it was not until the middle of the 19th century when, aided by the advance of technology, scientists were able to undertake the first explorations of the ocean depths. This second edition contains a new introduction and bibliography.

Multilateral Diplomacy and the Economics of Change

Multilateral Diplomacy and the Economics of Change By Dennis Benn

2004 | 231 Pages | ISBN: 9766371113 | PDF | 1 MB

"Multilateral Diplomacy addresses an important historical episode in the struggle of the developing countries to restructure the international economic order that was perceived by them to be an obstacle to development. Told from the perspective of a participant in the negotiations, the book traces the evolution of the developing countries as actors in the economic system and describes the circumstances which gave rise to the demand for the New International Economic Order. It presents a detailed analysis of the negotiations on the NIEO and compares the strategies adopted by the parties to the negotiations. The geopolitical context within which the negotiations were carried out is also described. Equally important, Multilateral Diplomacy highlights the role of South-South cooperation as a counter strategy pursued by the developing countries in order to strengthen their bargaining position. The study points to the essential continuity between the struggle for the NIEO during the 1970s and the current efforts of developing countries to defend their economic interests in the negotiations taking place within the framework of the World Trade Organization and other similar forums. Underwater and Maritime Archaeology in Latin America and the Caribbean

Underwater and Maritime Archaeology in Latin America and the Caribbean By Margaret E. Leshikar-Denton; Pilar Luna Erreguerena; Jeronimo Aviles

2008 | 316 Pages | ISBN: 1598742620 | PDF | 4 MB

The waters of Latin America and the Caribbean are rich with archaeological sites, including coastal settlements, defensive forts, freshwater sources, fishing-related activities, navigational aids, anchorages, harbours, ports, shipbuilding sites, shipwrecks and survivor camps. Tragically, treasure-hunting has had a deep impact on these maritime cultural resources, especially on shipwrecks. In the last 20 years, archaeologists have been fighting the battle against these treasure hunters in an attempt to preserve these resources as a source of cultural heritage, rather than allow them to be viewed solely as a means for financial reward. Case studies written primarily by Latin American and Caribbean archaeologists demonstrate exciting and cutting edge research, conservation, site preservation, and interpretation. As a result, this groundbreaking book documents the emerging research interests of maritime archaeologists in Latin America and the Caribbean.
