Ready, Wet, Paint! Learn to paint a Horse Portrait in Watercolor

In this class, you will learn step-by-step how to take a reference picture, transfer it to watercolour paper, and paint it using several core watercolour techniques. Together we will paint a portrait of Haflinger Horse with bridle, which is the project of the class. At the end of the class, you will have a beautiful completed watercolour painting. We cover techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, using salt for fur texture and painting in layers. In addition, we tackle several big challenges when painting animals, such as:

creating the illusion of fur and hair

concentrating contrast around the facial features to help make those more expressive

painting white fur, i.e. painting negatively and using opaque white paint and ink for whiskers and other white marks

Focusing on specific details to add softness and character to the subject without painting every single detail

working in subsequent layers to add depth

working wet on wet and wet on dry to avoid splotches or unwanted lines, edges or marks

using blooms strategically to push pigment towards the edges of dampened areas

Overall, I think this class is suitable to all levels if you have already followed my first Skillshare class. If you have not, I would suggest following that first as it also covers basic techniques of watercolor and as it teaches you how to transfer your line drawing to watercolour paper. Alternatively, an intermediate watercolour artist may already have these skills and may not need to follow my first course.
