Player vs. Monster The Making and Breaking of Video Game Monstrosity (Playful Thinking) (True EPUB)

Player vs. Monster The Making and Breaking of Video Game Monstrosity (Playful Thinking) (True EPUB)

English | February 7th, 2023 | ISBN: 9780262373234 | 256 pages | True EPUB | 26.31 MB
A study of the gruesome game characters we love to beat—and what they tell us about ourselves.
Since the early days of video games, monsters have played pivotal roles as dangers to be avoided, level bosses to be defeated, or targets to be destroyed for extra points. But why is the figure of the monster so important in gaming, and how have video games come to shape our culture’s conceptions of monstrosity? To answer these questions, Player vs. Monster explores the past half-century of monsters in games, from the dragons of early tabletop role-playing games and the pixelated aliens of Space Invaders to the malformed mutants of The Last of Us and the bizarre beasts of Bloodborne, and reveals the common threads among them.
Covering examples from aliens to zombies, Jaroslav Švelch explores the art of monster design and traces its influences from mythology, visual arts, popular culture, and tabletop role-playing games. At the same time, he shows that video games follow the Cold War–era notion of clearly defined, calculable enemies, portraying monsters as figures that are irredeemably evil yet invariably vulnerable to defeat. He explains the appeal of such simplistic video game monsters, but also explores how the medium could evolve to present more nuanced depictions of monstrosity.

English | 2023 | ISBN: 1484290534 | 155 pages | PDF,EPUB | 2.26 MB
Tech SEO Guide provides a reference for everyone who works on the technical side of SEO. SEO has always had a technical component but over the last several years, the technical challenges are increasing as websites deliver richer and more engaging experiences. Those experiences can make it harder for Google to crawl a website and rank a website in search results. Given how important organic search rankings can be for a website’s traffic, it is more important than ever to make sure the technical fundamentals are in place to support a website’s SEO performance.
SEO professionals includes marketers, developers, programmers, UX professionals, designers, and business executives because technical SEO impacts and overlaps with so many different areas of a business. Because the book addresses a wider audience, it provides technical details but also includes higher-level discussions about how search engines and robots work too.
There are many different aspects of technical SEO and it is difficult to keep track of every detail, especially for people who only work on technical SEO matters on an occasional basis. Because of that, this guide book can be read all at once for those wanting to study technical SEO in detail or it can be read a paragraph at a time, allowing people to refer back to quickly jog their memory or review a complex topic. Each chapter walks through a different area of technical SEO, addressing specific scenarios and questions about that particular area. After discussing each section, the chapter will conclude with a summary of the important items to measure and monitor related to that section.
What You Will LearnWhat factors to keep in mind as you begin a redesign of the websiteHow to evaluate technical factors to see if a technical configuration is causing traffic to dropHow to perform regular audits of a website to identify problems or areas of opportunity

Fractals and Chaos The Mandelbrot Set and Beyond

English | PDF | 2004 | 321 Pages | ISBN : 0387201580 | 33.21 MB
"It is only twenty-three years since Benoit Mandelbrot published his famous picture of what is now called the Mandelbrot Set. The graphics were state of the art, though now they may seem primitive. But how that picture has changed our views of the mathematical and physical universe! Fractals, a term coined by Mandelbrot, are now so ubiquitous in the scientific conscience that it is difficult to remember the psychological shock of their arrival. What we see in this book is a glimpse of how Mandelbrot helped change our way of looking at the world. It is not just a book about a particular class of problems, but contains a view on how to approach the mathematical and physical universe. This view is certain not to fade, but to be part of the working philosophy of the next mathematical revolution, wherever it may take us. So read the book, look at the beautiful pictures that continue to fascinate and amaze, and enjoy! "
From the foreword by Peter W Jones, Yale University
This heavily illustrated book combines hard-to-find early papers by the author with additional chapters that describe the historical background and context. Key topics are quadratic dynamics and its Julia and Mandelbrot sets, nonquadratic dynamics, Kleinian limit sets, and the Minkowski measure.
Benoit B Mandelbrot is Sterling Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Yale University and IBM Fellow Emeritus (Physics) at the IBM T J Watson Research Center. He was awarded the Wolf Prize for Physics in 1993 and the Japan Prize for Science and Technology in 2003.

Technological Concepts and Mathematical Models in the Evolution of Modern Engineering Systems

English | PDF | 2004 | 261 Pages | ISBN : 376436940X | 30.85 MB
M. LUCERTINI, A. MILLAN GASCA, AND F. NICOLO 1 Technology as Knowledge: The Case of Modern Engineering Systems In recent years scholars coming from the fields of history and philosophy of sci ence and technology have devoted much attention to the problem of "technology as knowledge" and to the emergence of an autonomous engineering science in the Industrial Agel. This interest echoes a growing awareness among engineers of the independence of their conceptual approach with respect to other forms of knowl edge, linked to the consolidation of autonomous academic engineering research in th the 20 century. A careful examination of the nature of technological knowledge appears particularly valuable in view of the pervasive presence of technology in contemporary life and culture, not only as a result of its impressive achievements, but through the less obvious influence of its concepts and viewpoints as well. The activity of engineers and technicians has been traditionally based on the practical ability to cope with specific situations and to attain the corresponding specific goal by means of the design and realization of an artifact or structure, on the basis of past experience handed down by tradition and applied by means of trial-and-error and rule-of-thumb procedures. But the existence of a theoreti cal background and of principles underpinning this activity can be traced back to classical antiquity.

Error Correction Codes for Non-Volatile Memories

Error Correction Codes for Non-Volatile Memories

English | PDF | 2008 | 335 Pages | ISBN : 1402083904 | 6.46 MB
After "A Mathematical theory of communication" by C. E. Shannon, the 'Coding Theory' has begun its tremendous development as interface between Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics.Contributions by mathematicians have focused on the design of new codes and the study of their properties, while contributions by engineers have focused on efficient implementations of encoding/decoding schemes. The research activities in Coding Theory have produced a vast range of different codes (with usually several alternative encoding/decoding algorithms), and their availability has pushed for new applications. Nowadays it is hard to find an electronic device which does not use codes: for example, we listen to music via heavily encoded audio CD's and we watch movies via encoded DVD's. There is at least one area where the use of encoding/decoding is not so developed, yet: Flash non-volatile memories. Flash memory high-density, low power, cost effectiveness, and scalable design make it an ideal choice to fuel the explosion of multimedia products, like USB keys, MP3 players, digital cameras and solid-state disk.
In ECC for Non-Volatile Memories the authors expose the basics of coding theory needed to understand the application to memories, as well as the relevant design topics, with reference to both NOR and NAND Flash architectures. A collection of software routines is also included for better understanding.
The authors form a research group (now at Qimonda) which is the typical example of a fruitful collaboration between mathematicians and engineers.

Masonry Constructions Mechanical Models and Numerical Applications

Masonry Constructions Mechanical Models and Numerical Applications

English | PDF | 2008 | 168 Pages | ISBN : 3540791108 | 6.64 MB
Numerical methods for the structural analysis of masonry constructions can be of great value in assessing the safety of artistically important masonry buildings and optimizing potential operations of maintenance and strengthening in terms of their cost-effectiveness, architectural impact and static effectiveness. This monograph firstly provides a detailed description of the constitutive equation of masonry-like materials, clearly setting out its most important features. It then goes on to provide a numerical procedure to solve the equilibrium problem of masonry solids.
A large portion of the work is devoted to examples and applications. After solving some simple equilibrium problems, for which the explicit and numerical solutions are compared, three cases dealing with the statics of important monuments are then presented. The numerical modeling yields essential information on the stress field and crack distribution, and enables assessing the effects of strengthening operations. Lastly, a ladle employed in the iron and steel industry is studied, and the behavior of the refractory material lining the metallic vessel characterized.
