Join Ian Spanier on set as he photographs a celebrity portrait. Ian’s task for this particular shoot is to create images that would be right at home in any celebrity magazine, whose images often have a lighter, airy quality about them. The first part of this segment you’ll be a fly on the wall watching the session unfold. Afterwards Ian will walk you through his light setup and explain why he’s taking this approach and how he creates the final images. You’ll also see how he interacts with his subjects, who are often actors, musicians or other celebrity types who have their own personalities to add to the mix.
Living in Los Angeles, Ian is often asked to go to the client for their convenience and knowing how to set up a studio in any location is vital. In this course Ian will show you a simple two-light set-up and how he works with his subjects to bring out their unique character. This is especially important when working for performers or other creatives as their image and their persona is very much their personal brand. When it comes to lighting, Ian shares what he’s looking for and how he has trained himself to see light by analyzing catch lights in his subjects’ eyes and he stresses the importance of experimentation to define your style.

Ian makes studio lighting understandable. Using a three-light setup we get to see how he creates “big light” that mimics the type of lighting ratios you’d get when working near a large window. Using three lights and various modifiers, Ian creates a lighting scenario that offers consistent and repeatable results.
This segment was filmed at Canon’s Professional Technology and Support Center in Burbank, California.
