Municipal Font Family

The Municipal family of fonts and patterns were inspired by type director Ken Barber’s fascination with utility covers and designed for maximum street credibility. Its 15 fonts are optimized for text and display in print and screen environments, and include stenciled and shaded styles for large out-of-home applications. Municipal’s light weights are crisp, sleek and smart, while its mid-range fonts are direct and exceptionally readable. At the bold end of the spectrum, the typeface’s sturdy slab serifs set a striking yet confident tone. Twenty-six pattern motifs re-imagine the ornamentation on iron manhole covers as handy decorative design elements. Perfect for books, magazines and other print material, its clarity and solidity also make it ideal for web applications, wayfinding systems, signage, and of course, brands, products and personalities looking to steal attention.

MoMA Sans - Custom Typeface by Commercial Type Foundry

As regular visitors to The Museum of Modern Art, we were both honored and intimidated by the opportunity to create a new typeface for the institution. A major expansion project provided the impetus for a refresh of communications and signage; as part of this process, MoMA decided to replace the mix of sans serifs they had been using by commissioning one cohesive family to cover their full range of typographic needs, including exhibition graphics, print materials, subway posters, wall labels, film schedules, mobile apps, the website, and signage, to name just a handful of the hundreds of applications. Our solution was MoMA Sans, drawn by Christian Schwartz under the direction of the MoMA in-house design team and London design consultancy Made Thought, with input from Matthew Carter.

Kommune Inline Font

Kommune is a display typeface inspired by the vernacular shop- and promotion letterings of Burkina Faso. Originally designed as a stencil typeface for the solo show and accompanying catalogue of Burkina Faso born Architect Francis Kéré (famous for his Laongo Opera Village and communal school buildings) at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, it is now also available in a new version as a normal, non stencil typeface.

This beautiful font explores 3 very individual styles of one typeface. Each style pays homage to classic sans serif typefaces while adding contemporary flair to its characteristics. With both formal and informal styles, Aestetico explores how the shapes and curves of letters change their perception and focus.
