Aldo Novarese designed this typeface for Switzerland’s Haas foundry, and the International Typeface Corporation licensed it in 1980. Novarese is an interesting blend of old and new. In this case, the old is seen in the classic forms and proportions, while the new is seen in a large x-height, low contrast between thick and thin strokes, and wide range of weights. The italic is unusual with its cursive lowercase and upright capitals, echoing the earliest Italic designs. ITC Novarese is a fine display face that also works well in text.

Whereas the default forms of the face are regal, it’s flourishes must be activated through the swash set. For a look more restrained, activate the stylistic alternates. The lowercase forms are 20% smaller in height than Aviano’s lowercase forms, so the families are not interchangeable. However, they can still be used well together. Like all monospaced fonts, all letters align vertically in a multi line setting. The rhythm created is peculiar, since large letters such as m and w occupy the same space as narrow ones like i. Because we have 4 different weights: light, regular, bold and black the design of some characters have to be adapted to fit the same width and achieve a constant light/dark value throughout.
