In April 2009 The Entente was commissioned to design an on-going identity for artist and printmaker, Jake Spicer. The project’s bespoke typeface, was re-cut multiple times over a period of 9 months (becoming a personal labour of love), before arriving at the current commercial cut. The name ‘Fortescue’ is derived from a dwelling in Sidmouth, Devon, England where Spicer began his career. Originally drawn in a Regular weight for the comprehensive re-design of photography magazine HOTSHOE, we are pleased to release BASIS GROTESQUE commercially, some three years after its initial conception. Over the course of the past 36 months, we’ve exhaustively refined and extended the family into a 16-style brood, and in-so-doing have had the opportunity to test all iterations and sub-iterations of BASIS GROTESQUE across countless platforms, printed and otherwise.
