• Many calligraphers will agree that Roman Capitals is one of the most beautiful yet difficult hands to master. Its beauty is in its simplicity of form and structure, yet understanding the form and structure and applying them skillfully can take years of mindful practice. Turquoise is a typeface based on my Capitalis romana’s practice with a with flexible broad edged brush and gouache. The main concept was based on the fundamental strokes that is common to study when you practice Roman letters. That’s why many Serifs had these unfinished terminal serifs. The goal was to designed roman capitals that looked smoothly designed with brush and not carved. During the lowercase process I was following Foundational calligraphy, still with a flat brush. Turquoise contains small caps, many discretionary ligatures, ornaments, swashes and several brushy nature inspired ornaments accessible via Opentype; is ideally suited for headlines or body text in advertising, packaging and visual identities, its delicate shapes & curves, endings give a sweet, elegant and harmonic feeling. Turquoise Capitals were adjusted and redesigned at “Tipobrda” workshop in Slovenia.The flags designed for this font project show one of the richest island of the Mediterranean where my parents are from: Sicily. This southern Italian region has so unique spots like Stromboli part of the Aeolian Islands and the Pelagie Islands . Those pictures in use where taken this year. The original text, and display series was tuned for distinct character frequency and repetition when set in Spanish. • Aptifer Sans and Aptifer Slab are two 21st century typeface families created by Mårten Thavenius. Each family has seven weights, in roman and italic respectively, making 28 font styles in total. A heritage from two design traditions can be seen in Aptifer. One is the robust American gothic typefaces, like M. F. Benton’s, from around 1900. This is combined with the openness and legibility that comes from the humanist tradition. The sans serif part of the family, Aptifer Sans, is designed without excessive details disturbing the reading. Its sibling Aptifer Slab with its wedge slab serifs is more eye-catching but still suited for text settings. The italics fit well into the text flow of the roman. They are a bit narrower than the roman and have cursive characteristics.
