"All the discussions so far on approximating calculations, aside from making the mathematical method more creative, provide extraordinarily valid working principles to “train” us to think in terms of cost/benefit. I believe this can help us develop an ideal mindset to assess when, not only in mathematics but in any field, going beyond a certain degree of precision might incur costs that are no longer worthwhile or sustainable. Alternatively, if we wish to “invert” the concept, when small approximations in our goals, or expectations, can lead to substantial savings in terms of time, money, and resources. I am not sure if there already exists some physical or mathematical law that describes this phenomenon, but everyone has likely noticed that, in any project or endeavor, a genuinely “reasonable threshold of imperfection” can be easily identified; a demarcation line where further effort in accuracy, completeness, or control is not justified by the associated costs or sacrifices. Hence, in my opinion, trying to pinpoint this threshold whenever we aim to define our objectives or our paths remains one of the most precious tools of “intelligent productivity” we can ever have."
