Watts’s work has been featured in Southwest Art , American Artist, Art of the West, Western Art Collector, American Art Collector, and Drawing and Workshop magazines. He holds Master Signature Member status from the Oil Painters of America, is a Signature member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and an artist member of the California Art Club. Jeff participates in the prestigious Prix de West Invitational at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and was recently honored with a Solo Exhibition at the Taos Art Museum and Fechin House. He is represented by Trailside Galleries in Scottsdale, AZ and Jackson Hole, WY as well as the Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, Texas.

This class is an introduction to concepts that are necessary to understand for the successful drawing of the human figure. The fundamental principles of gesture, structure and mass will be applied to the figure through the use of the Reilly rhythm and abstractions, basic anatomy and the study of form. In this phase you will learn to break the figure down into various “mannequins” and to understand the canons of measurement and proportion. You will also be introduced to the male and female planes, and how to unify your figures using the basic figure abstraction. Terms defined in this phase will become critical for studying and communicating anatomical information later. Students at the Atelier often find the core phases to be the most challenging. We will cover many concepts you must commit to memory through patient practice and repetition. Remember that lessons can be watched as many times as you like. The goal of this phase is to provide you with a working understanding of the essential building blocks of all drawing, and ultimately painting, in the Watts method.  You will be introduced to concepts such as value scales, essential geometric shapes used to breakdown the complex forms of the head and figure, the four essential edges used to make an object look three dimensional, negative vs. positive shapes, and other fundamentals.
