This class is designed to give new students an introduction to the core drawing classes of the Atelier. It is also beneficial for all students looking for additional practice in all three disciplines. The class will feature four weeks of head drawing, three weeks of figure drawing (long pose), and three weeks of quick sketch.

In this course, Robert Watts will show you how to execute a studio landscape painting with a focus on structures.. Join Brian Knox, as he breaks down and then builds up the process of constructing the human head. This course will instill a solid knowledge of the underlying structure of the human head. Using a combination of constructive and rhythmical approaches, students will learn how to first block in major forms, then break down the features and planes of the face, adding more information in a structured way, working ultimately towards a full value drawing.
This class is an introduction to concepts that are necessary to understand for the successful drawing of the human figure. The fundamental principles of gesture, structure and mass will be applied to the figure through the use of the Reilly rhythm and abstractions, basic anatomy and the study of form. Class work will be done from handouts and the live model, using both short and long poses. Instructor demonstrations and critiques are standard.
In this phase you will learn to break the figure down into various “mannequins” and to understand the canons of measurement and proportion. You will also be introduced to the male and female planes, and how to unify your figures using the basic figure abstraction. Terms defined in this phase will become critical for studying and communicating anatomical information later. Students at the Atelier often find the core phases to be the most challenging. We will cover many concepts you must commit to memory through patient practice and repetition. Remember that lessons can be watched as many times as you like. Fasten your seat belts for this phase, it is teaming with great information!
The goal of this phase is to provide you with a working understanding of the essential building blocks of all drawing, and ultimately painting, in the Watts method. You will be introduced to concepts such as value scales, essential geometric shapes used to breakdown the complex forms of the head and figure, the four essential edges used to make an object look three dimensional, negative vs. positive shapes, and other fundamentals.
This class will focus on drawing the landscape on archival papers using a variety of charcoal materials, with the ultimate goal to complete a finished portfolio or gallery piece. Topics covered include learning to pick quality photo reference that will make for a good drawing. Value control and organization. Edge manipulation as it relates to form and composition. And of course composition.
Emphasis will be placed on gaining an in-depth understanding of the body’s underlying geometry and anatomical structure. We will work in a tonal fashion to interpret the live model. The eye will be trained to observe, analyze, and execute edges, values, anatomical nuances, and ultimately calligraphy and idealization. Instructor demonstrations and critiques are standard.
